Request for Punishment of Threats Against Prosecutor in Newborn Investigation – Last Minute Turkey News
A report has been prepared for 18 suspects who were caught in the second wave operation of the Newborn Gang investigation. The operation, which took place on December 4th and was organized by the Financial Crimes Department of the Istanbul Police Department, led to the detention of 5 doctors, 5 healthcare workers, 3 nurses, and 1 civilian who were found to be collaborating with gang leader Fırat Sarı.
The investigation carried out by the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has resulted in a report being prepared for the 18 suspects. Among them, Mustafa Kemal Zengin is facing up to 4 years in prison for threatening Public Prosecutor Yavuz Engin in his office.
Zengin, in his statement revealed in the report, claims that he did not intend to threaten the prosecutor but was merely expressing his opinions. He apologized for any misunderstanding and stated that his actions were misinterpreted.
In addition to Zengin, Doctor Dursun Eryılmaz faces a prison sentence of 20 to 25 years for intentional murder through negligence, while Nurse Serenay Şenkalaycı may receive 2 to 5 years for forging official documents. Various other suspects are facing prison sentences for a range of crimes.
The Newborn Gang, as described in the indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, was led by doctors İlker Gönen and Gıyasettin Mert Özdemir with Fırat Sarı as the leader. The organization’s main goal was to manipulate the 112 referral system for neonatal intensive care units, inflate patient numbers, and maximize payments from the Social Security Institution.
The indictment reveals that the gang profited by prolonging hospital stays, exaggerating patient conditions, and directing patients to specific hospitals for financial gain rather than providing appropriate medical care. The primary motive of the gang was financial profit rather than the health and well-being of the babies involved.
