Residents raise concerns as gas leaks cause fire zones near M25 mine in Surkhandarya

A recent video captured near the “25th Anniversary of Independence” mine in Surkhandarya has revealed alarming gas leaks leading to multiple fire zones in the area. Local residents have reported that cracks have appeared around a closed well, resulting in gas leaks that have been ignited.

Residents living near the mine expressed their concerns, stating that “small ‘vents’ appeared around the closed well, from which gas leaked and was then set on fire.” Despite claims that oil may be leaking, residents have not detected any odors, and officials have remained silent on the issue.

To monitor the situation, individuals have been assigned to watch over each gas leaking “spring.” Reports indicate that gas is leaking from around 18-19 small spots, with 1-2 of them being large wells.

When reached for a response, the Ministry of Energy did not provide a reply to Kun.uz.

The M25 mine’s development began in 2017 but was halted due to accidents in 2024, leading to the relocation of nearby residents. Tragically, four employees of the contractor company, Eriell, lost their lives in a subsequent accident.

Reports from Kun.uz in November revealed another explosion at the mine, followed by a large fire and a decrease in the unpleasant odor. Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov stated that controlling the mine could take an additional 2-3 months at the beginning of November.

The situation at the “25th Anniversary of Independence” mine remains concerning, as gas leaks continue to pose a threat to the surrounding area. Residents are hoping for swift action and transparency from officials to address the ongoing issues at the mine.
