Restoring the Iconic Castles of Hungary: A Spectacular Exhibition

An exhibition showcasing the restoration of Somoskő, Fülek, and Divény castles will be opening on Wednesday in Fülek, Slovakia, at the Municipal Local History Museum. The exhibition features historical photographs from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as archaeological artifacts, according to an announcement from the Fülek Castle Museum.

The photographs displayed will document the restoration efforts led by Gábor Krúdy, former director of the Slovak Institute for Monument Preservation and Nature Protection in Lučenec. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the original images from the restoration process, as well as more recent work and the current state of the castles, showcasing the ongoing efforts to preserve these historic sites.

Additionally, archaeological finds from the three castles will be included in the exhibition. Artefacts from Fülek and Somoskő castles were discovered during excavations by the Fülek Castle Museum, while finds from Divény Castle were unearthed by the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Nitra. The artifacts date back to the 15th to 17th centuries and consist mainly of ceramic and metal objects used in everyday life.

The announcement highlights the significance of Krúdy’s photographs, as they are the only remaining records of the restoration and excavation efforts at the castles, with no other written documentation from that period being preserved.

The exhibition provides a unique opportunity to delve into the history and preservation of these important cultural landmarks.
