Gazi Süleyman Kirit, a resident of Mezitli district in Mersin, recently achieved a long-awaited dream from his youth. Kirit embarked on his military service journey in 1960 at Mersin Petty Officer Preparatory Secondary School and graduated in 1966 after completing his training at Istanbul Tuzla Infantry School.

After graduation, Kirit was appointed to the Konya Intelligence Group Command and later served in the Special Unit Command in Ankara. He also went to Cyprus in 1972 and 1974 to provide commando training to soldiers. The soldiers he trained played a crucial role in the success of the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974.

Despite his significant contributions to the operation, Kirit did not hold the title of veteran for many years. However, after learning about his right to veteran status, Kirit applied for the title, and with the help of Mersin Family and Social Services Provincial Directorate, he finally received his veteran title and medal 50 years later.

In a statement to the press, Kirit expressed his pride in finally receiving his medal after five decades. He recalled his time in Cyprus with fond memories, emphasizing the challenging conditions they trained under. Kirit mentioned that if given the opportunity, he would go back to serve again without hesitation.

Kirit also reflected on his deep appreciation for his military service and the rewarding experience of training soldiers for the Peace Operation in Cyprus. He expressed gratitude for the recognition he received as a veteran and proudly wears his medal as a symbol of his dedication to serving his country.
