Revitalizing Antakya: Restoring its Status as the Center of Ancient Civilizations

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanism, and Climate Change has announced plans to rebuild the city center of Antakya, making it the center of ancient civilizations once again. Following the devastating earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, efforts are underway to reconstruct the housing and bazaars that were heavily damaged. In Hatay, the historical Long Bazaar is being restored with the support of the ministry, allowing tradesmen to continue operating in temporary workplaces until new ones are built.

A total of 914 houses and workplaces are being constructed in the Uzun Bazaar area, representing a significant restoration project within Hatay’s historical district. With a focus on preserving the city’s cultural heritage, TOKI and the Presidency of Urban Transformation are working to deliver a total of 46,167 independent sections, including residences and village houses, by the end of the year.

One of the highlights of the restoration project is the story of Nurettin İmren, a master Künefe maker from Hatay, whose workplace was relocated to a temporary bazaar set up by the ministry. Minister Murat Kurum shared the success story of İmren on social media, emphasizing the resilience and determination of the province despite challenges.

As the rebuilding efforts continue, Minister Kurum expressed his commitment to making Antakya the center of ancient civilizations once again. Through collaborative efforts and a dedication to preserving the region’s rich history, the ministry aims to revitalize Hatay’s cultural significance and restore the Long Bazaar to its former glory.
