Revitalizing the Land Walls: UNESCO World Heritage

New Breath to Historic Land Walls on UNESCO World Heritage List

The historical peninsula is surrounded by walls dating back to the Byzantine period. The surroundings of those historical areas are being renewed, giving new life to the ancient structures.

National gardens are being created around the historical land walls from the Byzantine period on the historical peninsula. Three stages of the project consisting of five stages have been completed, with plans to continue the restoration and renovation efforts.

Fatih Mayor Mehmet Ergün Turan provided details about the project, stating, “The area we are currently in is the second stage of the Land Walls Nation Garden and this is an area of approximately 42 thousand square meters. It will be possible to enter Suriçi from Topkapı and go uninterruptedly to Yedikule Fortress without leaving any green areas or cycling paths.”

The Land Walls National Garden project, carried out by Fatih Municipality, also aims to make historical structures visible. Mayor Turan added, “When we cleared this area, not only did the city walls emerge, but Mimar Sinan’s important work was in inferior buildings in the past. This also emerged. The lodge emerged.”

This restoration project not only aims to beautify the area but also aims to showcase the historical and cultural significance of the land walls, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. With ongoing efforts to rejuvenate and preserve these ancient walls, the historical peninsula is set to become even more attractive for locals and tourists alike.
