Rice Yield Loss Concerns in Edirne Due to Drought
Concerns arise in Edirne due to the potential yield loss in rice production caused by the ongoing drought. Edirne, a significant region that meets approximately 45 percent of Turkey’s rice needs, has been experiencing excessive heat and a lack of rain during the summer months, leading to the drying up of the Tunca and Meriç rivers used for irrigation.
In response to these challenges, the Edirne Governorship has taken steps to prevent yield loss by collaborating with institutions and producers in the region and implementing a rotational irrigation model. Despite these efforts, Hüseyin Arabacı, the President of the Edirne Chamber of Agriculture, acknowledged that there will still be some level of yield loss in rice production due to the adverse effects of the drought.
Arabacı described the current situation as a difficult year for rice producers, emphasizing the significant water shortages faced in both the Tunca and Meriç rivers. However, through the implementation of a rotational irrigation system, efforts have been made to distribute available water resources more effectively to mitigate damages to crops.
While Arabacı acknowledged that there will be a certain level of productivity loss in some areas, he remains hopeful that producers will be able to successfully harvest their crops. He also addressed concerns regarding the purchase price announced by the Soil Products Office, suggesting that a revision may be necessary to better support farmers who have faced challenges in various crops such as wheat and sunflower in addition to rice.
As the region prepares for the upcoming harvest season, the impact of the drought on rice yields will become clearer. Producers and officials will continue to monitor the situation closely and work towards sustainable solutions for agricultural sustainability in Edirne.
