Rise in Upper Respiratory Infections Overwhelming ICU’s in Istanbul

Increase in upper respiratory tract infections… Occupancy in intensive care units Minister Koca: The rate in Istanbul is 83 percent
Upper respiratory tract infections are becoming increasingly common in recent days, according to Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca. The most common flu, influenza, is followed by RSV and Covid, he said. Koca also noted that there has been nearly a 20 percent increase in emergency applications compared to the same period last year.
Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Minister Koca mentioned that upper respiratory tract infections are also on the rise in other countries, citing seasonal conditions as the reason. When asked about the occupancy rate in hospitals due to the epidemic, Koca reported that the service bed occupancy rate in hospitals is 65 percent on average, with the intensive care bed occupancy rate at approximately 72 percent.
In Istanbul, the intensive care occupancy rate is approximately 83 percent, representing a slight increase compared to last year. Minister Koca highlighted the city’s efforts to address this increase by increasing the number of beds and the dedication of healthcare professionals.
Additionally, Koca provided recommendations for protecting against infection, advising the public to consult family physicians if symptoms persist, get vaccinated if they are in a high-risk group, and wear a mask if infected. He also emphasized the importance of hygiene, adequate fluid intake, and proper nutrition in preventing the spread of infections. The minister’s statements reflect the need for increased awareness and preventive measures as respiratory infections continue to rise.
