Rising Death Toll: Extreme Heat Claims 90 Lives in Mexico

Extreme Heat Wave Leads to Increase in Deaths in Mexico

As temperatures continue to soar in Mexico, especially in the states of Veracruz, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and San Luis Potosi, the country is facing a rising death toll due to the record heat.

According to reports in the Mexican press, a total of 90 people have lost their lives to extreme heat since the beginning of 2024. The latest data from the Ministry of Health reveals that 29 people died between May 29 and June 5 alone.

Hospitals have been inundated with approximately 2 thousand cases of sunstroke as people struggle to cope with the scorching temperatures. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued warnings of a new heat wave that will affect the entire country, urging vulnerable individuals such as chronic patients to avoid going outside during certain hours unless absolutely necessary.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has reported that the country experienced its highest temperatures in history during the last 15 days of May. A staggering 14 states in Mexico are currently experiencing temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

As the heat wave persists, authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions to stay safe and cool during this challenging period. Stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun to prevent heat-related illnesses.
