Russia Moves S-70 Okhotnik-B UCAV to Mass Production
The Russian government has announced that the mass production of the Okhotnik SİHA, also known as the S-70 Okhotnik-B, will start in 2024. This unmanned aerial vehicle, developed by Sukhoi, conducted its first ground test in 2018 and its first flight in August 2019.
The S-70 Okhotnik SİHA has undergone significant improvements since its development, with a focus on enhancing its stealth capabilities. It is reported that the mass production program for this drone has been postponed, with the original plan of commencing mass production in 2023.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that the S-70 Okhotnik UAV conducted a successful flight alongside the Su-57 fighter jet in September 2019. The Russian government has expressed its intention to quickly deploy the S-70, with plans to begin deliveries in 2024.
Although there have been reports suggesting that the S-70 could be used in Ukraine in 2022, official deployment within the Russian Aerospace Forces has not yet occurred. However, mass production of the S-70 is expected to begin in the second half of 2024, pointing to potential operational deployment before 2025.
There are still unanswered questions regarding the specific role of the S-70 and the number of units to be delivered to Russian forces. The Su-57 could potentially use the S-70 as a “wingman” or for carrying out strikes in theater of operations.
Despite the postponement in the mass production schedule, the Russian government is pushing forward with its plans to deploy the S-70 Okhotnik SİHA, marking a significant step for the Russian Air Force.
