Samsung Electronics Workers Extend Strike Indefinitely
Following a three-day general strike organized by the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), the union has announced that they will be extending their strike indefinitely. The decision was made after management showed no willingness to negotiate on the union’s demands.
The NSEU represents almost a quarter of Samsung Electronics employees in South Korea and claims that their actions are disrupting production. However, Samsung has denied this claim, stating that they will ensure there are no disruptions to their production lines and are committed to negotiating with the union in good faith.
Despite criticism of low participation in the strike, union chairman Son Woo-mok defended the union, pointing out that they are still relatively young compared to other unions and have not had enough time to train their members. The union argues that bonus calculations based on a company’s operating profit minus its cost of capital are unfair.
Samsung recently announced a significant increase in profit for the second half of the year, further fueling the union’s demands. Workers participating in the strike have gathered at Samsung’s headquarters in Seoul, determined to continue their actions until their demands are met.
The union has declared an indefinite strike starting from July 10, emphasizing their commitment to fighting for fair treatment and better conditions for all Samsung employees. The standoff between the workers and management shows no signs of ending soon, as both sides remain firm in their positions.
