Minister of Justice Bozdağ Promises Sanctions to Deter Exorbitant Rent Increases
Minister of Justice Bozdağ, who is also the AK Party Şanlıurfa Deputy Candidate, recently spoke out in a live broadcast of a private television program in Şanlıurfa covering important issues on the agenda, including the exorbitant rent increase problem. When questioned on the progress of the work in this area, Minister Bozdağ highlighted that the Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, is tasked with the responsibility of researching and tackling this issue. He stated that his ministry had already made preparations for the issue and clarified that the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization was also working on the matter.
Minister Bozdağ emphasized the limitation of rent increases to 25 percent in residences until July 31, but acknowledged reports of exorbitant rent increases and legal issues submissions to the judiciary. He identified the crux of the issue as a lack of sanctions for noncompliance with the proposed regulation. Bozdağ laid out plans to include an article after article 237 of the Turkish Penal Code, which includes punishment by way of prison sentence, judicial fine, or administrative fine.
He stressed the need to include these sanctions to ensure the effectiveness of this regulation. Bozdağ recognized the importance of enforcing the regulation with sanctions to prevent noncompliance and professed the goal to take action in this regard after the election.
Additionally, Minister Bozdag discussed the progress of the work on a new constitution for Turkey, which he hopes will see broad consensus among political parties and be presented to the people for consideration in due time.
