Saved in the Snow: A Tale of Survival

Dozens of people were rescued after being stranded in the snow in several districts of Mersin, Turkey. The Metropolitan Municipality reported that heavy snowfall affected the high parts of Erdemli, Toroslar, Silifke, Mezitli, Tarsus, and Çamlıyayla districts, leading to the closure of roads connecting some neighborhoods.

In response to the snowstorm, the Road Construction Maintenance and Repair Department teams mobilized to clear the roads and assist stranded vehicles. Approximately 30 vehicles were stuck in various locations, prompting the teams to use work machines to open the roads. Additionally, the teams conducted shoveling and salting operations to ensure the safety of those trapped in the snow.

One of the rescued individuals, Tarık Karaver, recounted his experience of being stranded while on a picnic at Arslanköy Plateau in the Toroslar district. Karaver expressed gratitude towards the Metropolitan teams for their timely intervention, stating, “The car broke down, and we were stranded on the road with five people, including a sick 9-month-old baby. The Metropolitan teams came to our rescue and safely transported us from the area.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role played by emergency response teams in providing aid during harsh weather conditions. The swift actions of the Metropolitan Municipality helped prevent any major injuries or fatalities among those stranded in the snow.
