Minister Tekin: Over 1,500 Schools in Turkey Demolished and Rebuilt due to Earthquake
Minister Tekin, the Minister of National Education, announced that a significant number of schools in Turkey have been demolished and rebuilt due to the risk of earthquakes. During a press conference, Minister Tekin stated that the Ministry has inspected almost all of the pre-2000 building stock throughout Turkey.
Since 2013, approximately 3,602 schools have been retrofitted, with a focus on those in need. In addition, a total of 1,583 schools across Turkey have been completely demolished and rebuilt due to earthquake risks. Minister Tekin emphasized that these actions were necessary because many buildings constructed before 2000 did not adhere to earthquake legislation.
Taking a closer look at the situation in Tekirdağ, Minister Tekin mentioned that 252 schools were investigated in the area. Out of these, 118 have been retrofitted, while 64 require demolition and reconstruction. Fortunately, 48 of the schools in need have already been built.
The Ministry of National Education has taken the lead in examining the structural integrity of school buildings throughout the country in order to ensure the safety of students and staff. A total of 3,632 schools have been retrofitted in Turkey, and 1,583 schools have been completely rebuilt to meet earthquake standards.
The Ministry’s efforts to address the issue of earthquake-prone buildings demonstrate their commitment to the safety and well-being of students. Minister Tekin underlined the importance of taking proactive measures to mitigate the risks posed by older buildings and stressed the Ministry’s determination to continue working towards creating safer learning environments.
In related news, an image accompanying the article showcased an earthquake drill conducted in schools by Van AFAD.
