Beyoğlu Municipality Faces Second Eviction Crisis
The Beyoğlu Municipality is currently in the midst of a second eviction crisis, following a dispute with the General Directorate of Foundations. The historical building, which was rented to the municipality in 2022, was intended to be used for social, cultural, artistic activities, and as a youth center for a period of 10 years.
However, the General Directorate of Foundations recently found that the municipality was not in compliance with the regulations for 4 real estates in Terra Santa. As a result, the allocation agreement was terminated, and the municipality was asked to evacuate the building by Friday, according to a notification from the district governor’s office.
In response to the eviction decision, CHP mayors and 39 district chairmen protested the move and organized a protest march. Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney argued that the building was unlawfully evacuated 8 years before the protocol was signed, citing the opening of a mosque, library, and cafe on the premises. He claimed that these businesses were established 8 months before he took office.
Despite the municipality’s objection to the eviction, the Istanbul 10th Administrative Court sided with the municipality and granted them 30 days to respond and defend their case.
