Serbia and Hungary Jointly Consider Hosting the Olympic Games
After the Serbian president announced that Serbia will host the 2028 UEFA Europa League final, he also revealed his plans to compete jointly with Hungary for the hosting of the Olympic Games, according to a report by balk.hu.
The construction of the Serbian National Stadium in Surčin, near Belgrade, has officially begun, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that the 2028 final of the UEFA Europa League will be played in this stadium. He also suggested that Serbia could potentially sign up to host the Olympic Games in the future, in collaboration with Hungary, although no specific date was provided for this endeavor.
Citing an article from the Serbian publication Politics, the portal highlighted Vučić’s belief that hosting the Olympic Games would not only change Belgrade’s image but also boost the country’s reputation. The construction plans include the development of the largest Aqua Center in the region, alongside Budapest. Vučić emphasized that this initiative would enable them to compete with Hungary and set the goal of a joint bid between Hungary and Serbia to host the Olympic Games.
The announcement comes ahead of municipal elections in Belgrade and several Serbian cities on June 2, suggesting that the statement should be viewed in the context of domestic politics. However, the portal suggested that the discussion of co-hosting the Olympic Games with Hungary indicates ongoing dialogue between the two countries.
It is almost certain that the topic has been raised in discussions between Serbia and Hungary. The potential collaboration for hosting the Olympic Games could further strengthen the diplomatic ties between the two nations.
