Uzbekistan Hosts International Conference on Combating Terrorism and Extremism

Tashkent, Uzbekistan – On September 4-5, Tashkent will be the host city for an international conference aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism and extremism. The event, organized by the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Anti-Terrorism Center of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), will gather participants from various countries to discuss and exchange best practices in combating common security threats.

During his address to the conference participants, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of solidarity and cooperation in ensuring peace, security, and stability in the region. He highlighted the agenda of the conference, which includes studying successful national practices, establishing effective mechanisms for cooperation, exchanging knowledge in the fields of science and education, developing tools to prevent extremism, and addressing issues related to money laundering and terrorism financing.

President Mirziyoyev also mentioned the joint anti-terrorism exercises, named ‘East-Anti-Terror-2024,’ which will be held for the first time in Uzbekistan. These exercises are expected to enhance practical cooperation in countering security threats and improve the capabilities of special forces units.

The President acknowledged the increasing threats and dangers in cyberspace, emphasizing the need for improving the legislative framework and conducting joint activities to counter these challenges within international organizations. He reiterated Uzbekistan’s commitment to its National Strategy to Combat Terrorism and Extremism, which focuses on a comprehensive and systematic approach, including preventive measures, supporting education and upbringing, and ensuring social protection of the population.

President Mirziyoyev underscored the importance of reintegration for individuals brought back from conflict zones and highlighted the coordination of special services within the SCO and CIS as a priority for ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.
