Slovakia Border Police Checks to Continue

Slovakia to Extend Temporary Border Controls on Slovak-Hungarian Border

Slovakia has announced that it will once again extend the temporary border controls on the Slovak-Hungarian border that were initially introduced in early October. The extension, which is justified by the need to curb illegal migration, will be valid for one month, until December 23.

The decision to introduce temporary border controls was made on October 5, following similar measures by neighboring countries including the Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland. The aim of the border controls is to reduce the number of illegal migrants entering the country and to filter out potential threats to public order and state security, with checks being carried out along the entire border.

According to the Slovak Interior Ministry, the border controls implemented in October have proven to be effective, as the number of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border and being apprehended has decreased. Officials stated that the number of illegal migrants entering Slovakia via the Western Balkan transit route has already reached 46,000 this year, compared to 5,000 in the whole of last year.

The move comes as part of a broader effort by European countries to address the issue of illegal migration, with several countries implementing stricter border controls to manage the flow of migrants. The extension of border controls on the Slovak-Hungarian border underscores the ongoing challenges faced by countries in the region in managing migration and ensuring border security.

The government in Bratislava has reiterated its commitment to addressing the issue of illegal migration and maintaining the security of its borders. The extension of temporary border controls reflects a continued effort to address these challenges and protect the integrity of the Slovak-Hungarian border.
