Slovenian Parliament Recognizes State of Palestine

Slovenia Joins Spain, Ireland, and Norway in Recognizing Palestine

Slovenia has officially recognized the state of Palestine, following in the footsteps of Spain, Ireland, and Norway. In a recent vote held in Slovenia’s 90-seat parliament, the decree to recognize the Palestinian state was approved with 52 yes votes. The remaining MPs did not participate in the voting.

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob made a statement before the vote, indicating that discussions with allies about recognizing Palestine began in February of this year. He mentioned that Slovenia had achieved its own right to independence 33 years ago and that it was now time to support the Palestinian nation’s right to self-determination.

Golob expressed, “We Slovenians have been dreaming of this right for 1000 years. We achieved it 33 years ago. Unfortunately, the Palestinian nation has not yet achieved this right.” The move by Slovenia to recognize Palestine adds to the list of over 140 countries, which include more than two-thirds of the United Nations, that have already acknowledged the state of Palestine.

The recognition of Palestine by Slovenia is seen as a significant step towards demonstrating global support for the Palestinian cause and their aspirations for statehood. As more countries align themselves with the recognition of Palestine, hopes for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continue to be kindled.
