South Korean and US Diplomats to Discuss Alliance, North Korea, and Trump’s Tariffs in Munich
The top diplomats of South Korea and the United States are scheduled to meet in Munich on February 15 to discuss the bilateral alliance, North Korea issues, and President Trump’s tariff plans. This meeting between Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will mark the first high-level talks between the two allies since the start of the Trump administration.
South Korea is looking to solidify its relationship with the second Trump administration amidst political uncertainties following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol and his martial law bid last year. Trump’s recent announcements about imposing tariffs on steel, aluminum, vehicles, and chips have raised concerns in South Korea about potentially becoming a target of these policies. Swift coordination with Washington is crucial in addressing these concerns.
The South Korean foreign ministry highlighted that “bilateral economic cooperation” will be a key topic of discussion during Cho’s meeting with Rubio, along with North Korean nuclear issues and trilateral cooperation with Japan. The talks in Munich come at a critical time for both countries as they navigate through various challenges in the region and globally.
