Southern Cyprus’s Illegal Agreements with US and France
President Ersin Tatar of Northern Cyprus has spoken out against the agreements made by Southern Cyprus with the United States and France, calling them unlawful. In a recent statement, President Tatar addressed various issues regarding the ongoing situation in Cyprus.
During a discussion with NTV Foreign News Manager Hüseyin Yılmaz, President Tatar proposed the opening of new border crossings to facilitate travel between the North and South of Cyprus. He highlighted the importance of freedom of movement and expressed his frustration with the Greek Cypriot administration’s reluctance to acknowledge the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
President Tatar suggested the creation of new border gates in Haspolat and Akincilar, which was met with surprise by the Greek side. Despite the positive feedback from the United Nations and other parties involved, the Greek leader Nikos Hristodulidis has yet to provide a favorable response to the proposals.
In addition to discussing travel and border issues, President Tatar emphasized the importance of cooperation with Turkey and the need for a two-state solution in Cyprus. He stressed the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot people and their right to self-determination.
President Tatar also expressed concern about the presence of foreign military bases in Southern Cyprus, particularly those established by the United States and France. He criticized the Greek leadership for their handling of the situation and called for a more balanced approach to politics in the region.
