Special Forces Successful in Hostage Rescue at Astana Bank
Law enforcement agencies successfully rescued all hostages and neutralized a hostage taker at Kaspi Bank in Astana, according to a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The incident took place on June 18 when an armed individual broke into the Kaspi Bank building on Dostyk Street and took seven employees hostage.
Upon receiving the report, police immediately responded to the scene and secured the area. Trained negotiators initiated dialogue with the captor, led by Internal Affairs Minister Marat Akhmetzhanov. After the negotiations, armed officers entered the building and overpowered the captor, ensuring the safety of the hostages. The operation was conducted by the Arlan special-purpose unit, with no military personnel involved.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, although tear gas and a stun grenade were used during the assault. The captor had demanded that money be transferred to certain accounts to help his family and friends, but the demands were deemed illegal by the authorities. As a result, a forceful operation was necessary.
Minister Akhmetzhanov emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to identify the factors contributing to the incident. Once the investigation concludes, banks will receive recommendations to enhance their security and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
In a statement issued after the incident, Kaspi Bank expressed gratitude to the police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs for their prompt response. The Astana Akim (mayor), Zhenis Kassymebk, who was present at the scene, also praised the well-coordinated and prompt actions of the authorities in neutralizing the captor and ensuring the safety of the hostages.
The hostages were examined by medics, and it was revealed that the captor is on a drug treatment registry. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining strong security measures in financial institutions to protect both employees and customers.
