Kyrgyzstan Sees Increase in Electricity Consumption in 2024

Bishkek – The Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan recently held a board meeting to announce the results of electricity consumption in the country for the year 2024.

According to the ministry, a significant increase in electricity consumption was recorded compared to the previous year. In 2024, the total electricity consumption in the republic reached 18.3 billion kilowatt-hours, which is 1.1 billion more than in 2023 (17.2 billion). Hydropower plants generated 12.77 billion kilowatt-hours, while thermal power plants produced 1.76 billion kilowatt-hours.

Furthermore, electricity imports from neighboring countries reached 3,629.7 billion kilowatt-hours, showing an increase of 141.7 million compared to the previous year.

During the meeting, the heads of energy companies also presented their annual reports. Key highlights included the completion of the rehabilitation of hydroelectric unit No. 1 of Toktogul HPP, which saw its capacity increased by 60 megawatts, allowing for an additional generation of 525.3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Additionally, the rehabilitation of unit No. 4 at Uch-Korgon HPP was completed, with its capacity increased by 16 megawatts (equivalent to an additional 140.6 million kilowatt-hours per year). Construction work on the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic under the CASA-1000 project was also successfully finished.

Overall, the Ministry of Energy highlighted the progress made in the energy sector in 2024 and emphasized the importance of continued efforts to meet the growing electricity demand in Kyrgyzstan.
