Standing Strong: Protecting the Visibility of Turkish Cypriots
President Ersin Tatar of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) recently called on the Turkish states to stand strong against the pressures aimed at isolating and marginalizing the Turkish Cypriot people. During his visit to New York for the 79th UN General Assembly activities, President Tatar emphasized the importance of unity among the Turkish states in supporting the Turkish Cypriot people.
President Tatar met with the Secretary General of the Organization of Turkish States (TDT), Ambassador Kubaniçbek Ömuraliyev, to discuss the ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the Turkish Cypriot people’s existence. President Tatar highlighted the support of Turkey and other Turkish states in advocating for the rights and recognition of the Turkish Cypriot people on the international stage.
The President also referenced the recent speech by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the UN General Assembly, where he emphasized the need to end the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people and uphold their rights in the Eastern Mediterranean. President Tatar echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of recognizing the TRNC as a sovereign and democratic state, representing the Turkish Cypriot people with their own language, culture, and institutions.
President Tatar also addressed the failure of past federal solution negotiations and the ongoing challenges faced by the Turkish Cypriot people. He called on the international community and the Organization of Turkish States to support the TRNC in ending the injustices and isolation imposed on its people. President Tatar expressed gratitude for the support of President Erdoğan and other Turkish states in securing observer membership for the TRNC within the TDT.
During the meeting, President Tatar urged the Turkish states to resist the pressures aimed at isolating the Turkish Cypriot people and reaffirmed the common history and culture shared among the Turkish nations. He highlighted the importance of unity and support from countries like Turkey in advocating for the recognition and rights of the Turkish Cypriot people on the global stage.
