State Reclaims Wine and Brandy Distillery in Batken Region

Return of Distillery Property to State in Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek, 15:14, 06 May 2025 — A functioning wine and brandy distillery located in Chon-Talaa village, in the Tort-Gul rural area of the Batken region, has been returned to the Kyrgyz state. This announcement was made by the press center of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (SCNS).
The distillery, which has a long and complex history, was initially transferred to private ownership in 1997. This decision stemmed from a protocol resolution passed by the local residents’ assembly, leading to the establishment of Tort-Gul LLC. In a subsequent move in 2006, the Tort-Gul rural municipality sold the distillery’s property—spanning an area of 2.89 hectares—to a private company with foreign ownership at a significantly low price.
Following a thorough pre-investigation check, the SCNS reported that the founders and director of the distillery voluntarily returned both the property and the land plot to the State Property Management Agency. This action concludes a protracted issue regarding the ownership of the distillery and demonstrates a commitment to restoring state property that had been previously privatized under contentious circumstances.
The return of the distillery is a notable development for the Batken region and is expected to have implications for local economic development and governance.
