
Study Shows Microloans in Kyrgyzstan Primarily Used for Consumer Purchases

Microcredit organizations in Kyrgyzstan have provided loans totaling 29.9 billion soms in the first half of 2024, according to the National Statistical Committee’s analysis. This amount was distributed among approximately 561,000 individuals, representing a 1.6 times increase compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, the volume of microloans given out has risen by 26.6 percent.
The distribution of microloans across different regions of the country varies, with Bishkek accounting for 22 percent of the total volume, Osh region at over 16 percent, Jalal-Abad region at 15 percent, and Chui region at more than 14 percent.
In terms of the purposes for which these microloans were taken, more than half (50.7 percent) were used for consumer needs, nearly 22 percent for agricultural activities, 12 percent for trade and public catering ventures, and around 5 percent for construction projects.
This data sheds light on the increasing reliance on microcredit in Kyrgyzstan, highlighting the various sectors and regions where these loans are making an impact. It will be important to monitor this trend to assess its long-term implications on the country’s economy and society.
