Israeli Army Strikes Hezbollah Stronghold in Beirut, Killing 14
The Israeli army conducted a targeted airstrike on the Dahiyeh neighborhood in Beirut, Lebanon, known as one of Hezbollah’s strongholds. The strike, carried out with F-35 fighter jets, resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people and the injury of 66 civilians, with 9 in critical condition.
The attack specifically targeted Ibrahim Akil, the number two military wing of Hezbollah. Israeli officials were the first to announce Akil’s death, and Lebanese media confirmed that his body had been found and his family informed. Hezbollah also confirmed the news shortly after.
According to reports, the strike took place during a meeting of 20 commanders from Hezbollah’s special operations forces in a parking lot in the Dahiyeh neighborhood. The Israeli attack, which killed ten Ridvan Force commanders along with Ibrahim Akil, utilized four missiles that reached the floor where the meeting was taking place.
Israeli intelligence indicated that Akil and other senior leaders were meeting in an underground operations circle, leading to the decision to carry out the attack. The operation was described as a necessary opportunity for execution, disrupting Hezbollah’s chain of command and situational awareness.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as akin to an earthquake, with buildings shaking and chaos ensuing. The Israeli attack on Hezbollah’s stronghold marks the latest escalation in tensions between the two sides, following previous strikes that targeted senior officials from Hamas and Hezbollah.
Ibrahim Akil, also known as ‘Tahsin’, was a key figure within Hezbollah’s military structure and responsible for many of the organization’s major military operations. The US State Department had placed a bounty of up to seven million dollars on Akil for his alleged involvement in various attacks, including the 1983 bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut.
Israeli officials described Akil as the leader and architect of Hezbollah’s ‘Plan to Conquer the Galilee’, highlighting his strategic importance within the organization. The airstrike on Dahiyeh sends a clear message that Israel is willing to target Hezbollah leaders in their own strongholds, signaling a new phase in the ongoing conflict between the two groups.
