Supreme Court concludes investigation into Dink murder case
The Supreme Court has completed its investigation into the murder case of journalist Hrant Dink. In a recent statement, the Court of Cassation revealed that both gendarmerie intelligence and security intelligence personnel were involved in the incident, acting on behalf of an organization. The court emphasized that such large-scale actions cannot be carried out haphazardly and must be evaluated collectively.
According to the Court of Cassation, the decision to kill Hrant Dink was made without any conditions and was carefully planned and executed. The court noted that there was a significant period of time between the decision and its execution, demonstrating persistence and determination in carrying out the act.
Several provisions have been approved by the Supreme Court. Former police chiefs Ali Fuat Yılmazer and Ramazan Akyürek have been convicted of “deliberate killing by design,” while policemen Metin Balta and Yakup Kurtaran, along with journalist Ercan Gün, have been convicted of “membership of an armed terrorist organization.” The Supreme Court has upheld these convictions.
However, there have also been some revisions. The Court of Cassation highlighted that Volkan Şahin’s conviction for “deliberate killing with negligent behavior,” Şükrü Yıldız’s conviction for “aiding an armed terrorist organization,” and Mehmet Ali Özkılınç’s conviction for “membership of an armed terrorist organization” were based on a mistake in the appreciation and evaluation of evidence. The court overturned the verdicts as a result.
The Supreme Court has denied the release requests of defendants Muharrem Demirkale, Okan Şimşek, Veysal Şahin, Gazi Günay, Yavuz Karakaya, Osman Gülbel, and Hasan Durmuşoğlu, deciding to continue their detention. The acquittal of the Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court has been upheld by the Court of Cassation.
