Survey Shows Slim Majority Support for Building Nuclear Power Plant in Kazakhstan

A recent survey conducted by the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies (KazISS) revealed that a slight majority of respondents (53.1%) support the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. The survey, which included 1,200 citizens aged 18 and over, was conducted from Aug. 7 to 18.

The main reason cited by those who are in favor of building the nuclear power plant is the hope that it will help resolve electricity shortages in the country by 2030. On the other hand, 32.5% of respondents who oppose the idea are concerned about possible accidents and the environmental consequences.

Interestingly, 14.4% of respondents remain undecided on the issue. However, half of the respondents (51.0%) believe that they have sufficient information and knowledge to vote either for or against the construction of the nuclear power plant in the upcoming referendum.

The survey also found that 42.6% of respondents expressed a firm intention to participate in the referendum, while 16.4% stated that they would prefer to take part. On the other hand, 25.3% of respondents plan to refrain from participating, 8.9% are unlikely to go, and 6.8% find it difficult to answer.

The debate surrounding the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan has intensified, with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announcing plans for a national referendum on the issue during his state-of-the-nation address last year. The results of the survey provide valuable insights into the opinions and attitudes of the Kazakhstani population on this important issue.
