Taksim Closed for Celebrations, Open for Commemorations
The Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions and Other Labor Organizations Celebrate May 1st in Istanbul
A group of labor leaders and members of various labor unions and organizations gathered in Istanbul to commemorate May 1st, Labor and Solidarity Day. The event was attended by prominent figures such as CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality President Ekrem İmamoğlu, and CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik.
After a press statement at Saraçhane, Özel and his delegation left the area. The DİSK cortege and other unions faced resistance from the police, who used pepper gas at the barricade in Unkapanı as they attempted to march towards Taksim.
Hak-İş Confederation members left carnations on Kazancı Hill and laid a wreath in Taksim to honor the day. Memur-Sen also paid their respects by laying a wreath at the Republic Monument in Taksim Square.
