Tashkent to Implement State Health Insurance in 2024
The introduction of state health insurance mechanisms in Tashkent set to begin in 2024, as reported by the presidential press service. This move is aimed at improving healthcare services in Uzbekistan by providing a guaranteed package of free medical services and medicines financed from general taxes without imposing additional fees.
In recent years, the funding for the healthcare sector in Uzbekistan has seen a significant increase, but there are still challenges in providing adequate healthcare services to the population. Only 30% of complaints are resolved at the primary level, and treatments for some diseases are outdated. To address these issues, the government plans to review clinical protocols and update treatment methods for common diseases.
An experiment in the Syrdarya region to introduce a health insurance system highlighted the need for improved digitalization. In response, the Electronic Clinic and Electronic Hospital systems will be launched in 2024 to streamline processes and reduce administrative burden on healthcare professionals.
Under the state health insurance system in Tashkent, a system for referring patients to specialists through assigned family doctors will be established, along with the provision of free medicines through pharmacies based on electronic prescriptions. The President has also instructed to enhance the list and procurement process of medicines and medical products.
The gradual implementation of state health insurance mechanisms in Tashkent is part of the “Uzbekistan – 2030” strategy, with a newly established Center for Healthcare Projects tasked with attracting private sector involvement for public-private partnerships and reforming the pharmaceutical sector. This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to improve healthcare services and ensure better access to quality medical care for all citizens.
