“Teachers’ Unions Protest Outside Ministry of Education”

Teachers Unions Protest Teacher Amendment Bill in Front of Ministry of National Education

On Tuesday, the boards of two teachers’ unions organized a protest in front of the Ministry of National Education in Cyprus, as the Teachers Amendment Bill was brought up on the agenda of the relevant Parliamentary Committee.

The Secretary General of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union, Burak Maviş, highlighted the many problems in education, such as the working conditions and building safety in schools. However, Maviş stated that the Minister of National Education has yet to find a solution to these issues and instead targeted the personal rights of teachers. Maviş demanded the withdrawal of the Teachers Amendment Bill and urged for the Technical Committee to work closely with the two teachers’ unions to create a solution for the education system.

Similarly, Selma Eylem, President of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union, stressed that there are various problems in education, but the Ministry has shown a lack of interest in the quality of education. Eylem claimed that teachers’ rights are being attacked and stated that they do not accept this imposition. The unions are ready to act together to support a solution for these issues.

As the protest gained traction, the unions highlighted the importance of working together and addressing the many problems within the education system. The bill has not yet been withdrawn, and the unions continue to call for its dismissal.
