MKE Ankaragücü Club President Faruk Koca, along with the President of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Mehmet Büyükekşi, held a meeting to announce the decisions made following the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler after the Çaykur Rizespor match.
In the meeting, Büyükekşi emphasized the importance of keeping football ahead of everything else and creating a safe environment. He condemned the attack on Meler, stating that such behavior is unacceptable in any circumstance.
The health condition of Halil Umut Meler was reported to be improving, and he has been reunited with his baby. Büyükekşi emphasized that the TFF will not tolerate attacks and undue pressure on referees, and additional sanctions will be imposed as part of changes to disciplinary instructions.
The decision was made to start matches on Tuesday, December 19th, and the Professional Football Discipline Committee (PFDK) will determine whether Ankaragücü will be penalized.
Büyükekşi also expressed support for Meler, stating that it is out of the question for him to quit refereeing. The TFF will work to restore the psychology of the referees and ensure the safety of everyone involved in Turkish football.
The postponed matches will be played on January 10, and it was confirmed that the date of the Fenerbahçe-Galatasaray derby in the 18th week of the league has not changed.
Büyükekşi addressed resignation claims, emphasizing that the TFF is focused on their duty and there is no reason for them to resign.
The meeting concluded with discussion on the importance of supporting referees and making performance evaluations, as well as the decision to postpone Turkish Cup matches in order to give players the opportunity to rest.
