The Creation of the World Nomad Games
The World Nomad Games, a unique celebration of nomadic sports, music, and culture, is currently underway in Astana, Kazakhstan. With 89 countries participating and around 2,500 athletes in attendance, this fifth edition is shaping up to be the most impressive yet.
The journey to this point has been a challenging one, especially for the organizers who had to bring together a thousand komuz players for the event. In 2016, Bermet Tursunkulova, a former educator turned fundraiser, faced the daunting task of assembling these musicians from all corners of Kyrgyzstan. With the help of local NGOs and government partners, the ensemble was formed and ready to perform at the games.
The World Nomad Games, founded by sports coordinator Askhat Akibaev, showcase a variety of traditional nomadic sports and games, including mas wrestling, mounted archery, eagle-hunting, and more. These events not only highlight the athletic prowess of nomadic peoples but also serve as a reminder of their rich cultural heritage.
Despite initial doubts about the feasibility and relevance of such games, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan have proven that hosting the World Nomad Games can be a worthwhile endeavor. The economic benefits and increased tourism resulting from the games have shown that even small countries can make a global impact.
As the current edition of the games unfolds in Astana, spectators and participants alike are treated to a mesmerizing display of talent and tradition. From the opening ceremony featuring popular singer Dimash Qudaibergen to the competitive spirit on display in various events, the World Nomad Games serve as a testament to the power of sport in fostering international solidarity and cultural exchange.
With plans already in place for the games to return to Kyrgyzstan in 2026, it is clear that the legacy of the World Nomad Games will continue to inspire and unite nomadic peoples and spectators from around the world for years to come.
