The Future of Sustainable Trade: EBRD Expert Highlights Middle Corridor’s Importance
The Middle Corridor has been hailed as a sustainable route by Rony Saab, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) project coordinator for transport, logistics, and warehouse. In an interview with The Astana Times Youtube channel, Saab emphasized that the Middle Corridor is not just a backup option for emergencies, but a reliable route even in optimal conditions.
The interview delved into various aspects of the Middle Corridor, discussing Kazakhstan’s advancements in customs integration, border renovation, and trade infrastructure in Central Asia. Saab, who has been involved in the development of the Middle Corridor for over a decade, highlighted the route’s growth over the years, with cargo volume reaching four million.
During the interview, Saab underscored the importance of land transit, especially during the pandemic when ports were temporarily closed. He expressed confidence in the route’s sustainability, even in the face of geopolitical risks in the region.
When questioned about stakeholder recognition of the Middle Corridor’s potential, Saab affirmed that Kazakhstan and other countries have invested significantly in the route. The EBRD, for instance, is supporting the development of multimodal transport terminals in Tashkent to facilitate Central Asian countries’ participation in the route.
Furthermore, Saab lauded Kazakhstan’s progress in customs integration and border renovation, particularly praising Kazakhstan Temir Zholy’s efforts. He also highlighted the EBRD’s investments in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Kazakhstan’s transport and logistics sector, noting significant growth in capacity and services.
Speaking on improving trade efficiency, Saab recommended the adoption of a maritime single-window system for Kazakh ports like Aktau and Kuryk. This integration would enhance data sharing and competitiveness, ensuring compliance with future requirements.
