War has a terrible effect on its youngest victims – children. Lives are lost, and many are left traumatized, unable to speak or move due to the horrors they have witnessed. Today, we shed light on the psychological phenomenon known as shell shock that plagues these innocent souls.
Shell shock refers to the profound shock experienced by children who have been subjected to attacks during times of war. To gain a deeper understanding of this condition, we spoke to expert psychologist Çiğdem Bayram Topal. According to Topal, war induces intense depression, anxiety, and fear in children, leaving lasting scars. In times of conflict, shell shock is a common occurrence among both adults and children. Topal explains, “Given that bombardments, explosions, darkness, and fear overwhelm the psychological capacities of a person, a disconnection arises between their brain and body.”
Living under a constant threat of bombs, these children continually face death head-on. The fear and shock they experience are evident in their innocent eyes, filled with worry beyond their years.
“When faced with such traumatic events, it becomes impossible for the body to control its reactions. As a result, the eyes widen with anxiety, the body may involuntarily move and shake – we refer to this as syndrome,” Topal highlights. Children are already naturally afraid of the dark and loud noises, making it exceptionally challenging for them to cope with the harsh realities of war. The trauma inflicted upon them is significantly harder to heal.
As a society, it is crucial for us to recognize the profound impact war has on these young lives. Efforts must be made to protect and support their mental well-being, providing them with the necessary tools and resources to heal from the wounds of war. By understanding the long-term consequences of shell shock, we can better advocate for psychological support and implement measures to prevent further harm to children caught in conflict zones.
War should not rob children of their innocence. The time has come for us to protect them from the devastating effects of shell shock and create a world where they can grow and thrive, free from the horrors of war.
