The Importance of Birds in a Healthy World and Human Existence
The Chamber of Landscape Architects stresses the importance of protecting wetlands for bird migration
The Chamber of Landscape Architects has emphasized the crucial role of birds in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and human existence. In a recent statement, Gülizar Eroğlu, President of the Chamber of Landscape Architects affiliated with the Union of Chambers of Turkish Cypriot Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB), highlighted the significance of protecting wetlands to ensure the well-being of migratory birds.
As the autumn season approaches, birds embark on their migratory journey from the cold northern hemisphere to the warmer southern hemisphere. Cyprus, being located on two major migration routes, serves as a crucial resting and feeding ground for these birds. Eroğlu pointed out that Cyprus boasts a diverse bird population, with over 400 bird species observed on the island in 2017.
However, migratory birds face numerous challenges such as habitat destruction, climate change, poaching, and lack of resources. These factors threaten the survival of birds and disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems. Eroğlu emphasized the critical ecological roles of birds in maintaining healthy ecosystems and the well-being of human societies.
As professionals dedicated to preserving natural habitats and wetlands, landscape architects play a crucial role in protecting areas where birds feed, nest, and breed. Eroğlu urged the government to take decisive action in safeguarding these vital habitats, especially during the dry month of October when many wetlands are at risk of drying up.
By recognizing the importance of protecting wetlands and ensuring the conservation of bird habitats, we can contribute to the sustainability of ecosystems and the preservation of biodiversity. It is essential to prioritize the protection of migratory birds and their habitats for a healthier and more balanced world.
