The Last Master of Pottery: Keeping a Traditional Art Alive
Osman Eşme, a Pottery Artist from Van’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is on a mission to preserve and pass on the dying art of pottery to future generations. Working tirelessly in his workshop in Bardakçı District of Tusba district, Eşme is now showcasing his art in a new location with the construction of Bedesten Bazaar.
From learning the craft of pottery from the Urartians to present day, Eşme is determined to keep his profession alive despite the challenges. The art of pottery, which has been a tradition for centuries in the Bardakci neighborhood, saw a decline in 1976 with the rise of plastic usage. Many masters abandoned the profession, causing production in the field to come to a standstill. However, Osman Eşme remains the only master in Van continuing this tradition, and he is proud to carry on his father’s legacy.
In an interview with UAV correspondent, Eşme shared his journey in keeping the pottery profession alive. He mentioned how there used to be more than 20 masters and around 15 furnaces in their neighborhood, but the numbers dwindled over time. Eşme expressed his gratitude for being included in the Bedesten Bazaar in Van, where he will have the opportunity to showcase his art and sustain his livelihood by selling his pottery creations.
Highlighting the benefits of handmade pottery, Eşme emphasized that their products, such as cheese cubes and gift ornaments adorned with Urartian motifs, are not only aesthetically pleasing but also beneficial to one’s health. Their water jugs and lime strainers, in particular, retain the natural taste of water and enhance the flavor of food cooked in them.
As the last master of pottery in Van, Osman Eşme’s dedication to preserving this ancient art form is truly commendable. With his efforts, the legacy of pottery will be passed down to future generations, ensuring that this traditional craft continues to thrive in the modern world.
