The Mystery of Istanbul’s 130-Year-Old Tunnel on Istiklal Street

A 130-year-old mysterious tunnel has been unearthed beneath the Rumeli Inn on Istiklal Street in Istanbul. The tunnel was discovered during restoration works of the inn, one of three inns built by Sarıcazade Ragıp Pasha, the chamberlain of Abdulhamid II, named after the continents over which the Ottoman Empire spread – Anatolia, Africa, and Rumelia.

The most intriguing feature of the tunnel is that it offers a view of people walking in the inn from the battlements. Restoration manager Baki Coşkun described the surprise of discovering the tunnel during the restoration process, noting that the structure is currently being strengthened and cleaned.

Rumeli Han, where the tunnel was found, is an 8-floor building that was once used for storing goods. The restoration project is ongoing, and once completed, the mysterious tunnel will be open to visitors for artistic activities.

The historical significance of the tunnel adds to the charm of Istiklal Street, offering a glimpse into the past of Istanbul. The tunnel will provide a unique experience for visitors interested in exploring the city’s rich history.
