The “Green Schools Project” in TRNC Gathers Momentum
The “Green Schools Project” in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has been making significant strides in promoting environmental awareness and sustainable development education in schools. Launched in September 2022 through a joint effort between the Turkish Cypriot Entrepreneurial Women Association (GİKAD), the Ministry of National Education (MEB), and the Final International University (UFÜ) Environmental Research Center, the Green Schools Project aims to cultivate environmentally conscious and responsible generations while fostering a deeper connection between students and nature.
With its initial implementation in 25 schools, the Green Schools Project has now expanded to encompass more than 50 thousand students across 51 schools. The program is inclusive of various educational institutions, including special education schools, kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, and high schools under the Ministry of National Education’s jurisdiction.
One of the standout features of the Green Schools Project is its comprehensive environmental education program tailored for schools. Schools that excel in their environmental initiatives and activities within the program are honored with the prestigious “Green Flag” award. Currently, 19 schools have received this esteemed recognition. Furthermore, the Green Schools Project has introduced a unique dimension by pairing these Green Flag schools with 19 partnering businesses.
Dr. Şerife Gündüz, the coordinator of the Green Schools Project spearheaded by GİKAD and the UFÜ Environmental Research Center, shed light on the project’s overarching objectives in a recent interview. Emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness, Dr. Gündüz highlighted the project’s focus on instilling sustainable practices, fostering a harmonious relationship with nature, and combatting climate change impacts.
The Green Schools Project has seen remarkable success in engaging students in various eco-friendly activities such as tree planting, establishing agricultural gardens, forming environmental clubs, implementing recycling initiatives, organizing nature excursions, and conducting biodiversity surveys. Through these experiential learning opportunities, students are encouraged to reconnect with nature and develop a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation.
Looking ahead, the Green Schools Project aims to expand its reach to all educational institutions within TRNC. The growing demand for participation underscores the project’s significance in cultivating environmentally conscious youth and fostering a culture of sustainability. Dr. Gündüz also highlighted the pivotal role of school administrators and teachers in driving the project forward and expressed optimism for its continued success and impact on future generations.
As the Green Schools Project gains momentum and garners positive feedback from stakeholders, including businesses and NGOs, its influence on shaping a greener and more sustainable future for TRNC becomes increasingly evident. Through collaborative efforts and a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, the project is not only nurturing a generation of eco-conscious individuals but also inspiring a broader shift towards a more sustainable society.
