The Price Surge: Understanding the Rise in Meat Prices in Uzbekistan and Surrounding Nations

The recent surge in meat prices is not just a problem in Uzbekistan but is also affecting neighboring countries in Central Asia. According to investigations by Kun.uz, Kazakhstan has also been experiencing a rise in beef prices, with the Minister of Agriculture attributing it to growing demand from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. However, the head of Kazakhstan’s Meat Union disagrees and blames the price hike on the consequences of a livestock export ban in 2019.

In Uzbekistan, meat prices have been steadily increasing, with lamb prices rising by 9.1% and beef by 8.8% in March alone. Similar trends have been observed in Kazakhstan, where beef prices have gone up by 5.6% since the beginning of the year.

The Director General of the Meat Union of Kazakhstan points to a decline in domestic supply as the primary reason for the price hikes, rather than increased demand from neighboring countries. He emphasizes that the livestock export ban in 2019 led to a significant drop in the number of cattle in the country, resulting in a shortage of meat and higher prices.

In Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, citizens are also facing challenges with high meat prices. Kyrgyzstan temporarily banned meat exports last year due to rising prices attributed to exports to Uzbekistan. In Turkmenistan, beef prices have surged to 70-75 manats per kilogram, while Tajikistan has seen imported beef prices reaching 75 somoni per kilogram.

Globally, meat prices are on the rise, with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reporting the highest beef price index in 33 months. Data from the Numbeo analytical platform shows the average price per kilogram of beef in post-Soviet countries, with Uzbekistan’s average price at $8.17.

The increase in meat prices in Central Asia is influenced by various factors, including export bans, declining domestic supply, and growing demand from neighboring countries. As the region grapples with these challenges, stakeholders are exploring solutions to stabilize prices and ensure access to affordable meat for consumers.
