Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense has recently announced its contract signing to purchase 12 Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from Qatar. This move aims to meet the operational needs of the Indonesian Air Force until the delivery of the Rafale fighter jets, which are also being procured by Indonesia.
The Indonesian Ministry of Defense Public Relations Bureau confirmed the signing of the aircraft purchase contract on Tuesday. The Mirage 2000-5s, currently in the inventory of the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF), will be transferred to Indonesia as part of this agreement.
The acquisition of the French-made Mirage 2000-5 aircraft by Indonesia is estimated to cost 734.5 million US dollars. To cover this payment, Indonesia will utilize foreign loans. These specific Mirage models, first acquired by Qatar from France in 1997, are already 26 years old.
Developed by the French company Dassault, the Mirage 2000-5 is known for its versatility and has been in service with France since 1984. Primarily designed for fighter-bomber missions, this aircraft offers exceptional air superiority capabilities at high speeds and altitudes.
In the meantime, the Indonesian Air Force eagerly awaits the delivery of the Rafale fighter jets, which will serve as a long-term solution to their operational requirements. The Mirage 2000-5s are intended to temporarily bridge the gap until the arrival of the Rafale jets.
