The Rise of Marriage Age in Turkey: A Look at Late Marriages Among University Students

The number of young and qualified population in Turkey is decreasing day by day and this is worrying for the future. With the rate of university graduates in Turkey increasing from 8 percent to 24.6 percent in the last 15 years, the number of university graduates has surpassed 21 million. According to the 2019 data from the EU Statistical Office, Turkey has left behind all European countries in terms of university student ratio. This increase in the number of students is a result of the rapid growth in the number of universities in recent years.

Turkey now holds the title of the country with the highest number of university students relative to its population in Europe. With 95 out of a thousand people in Turkey being university students, the country far surpasses leading European countries in this field. For comparison, Germany and France have 40 out of a thousand people as university students, while the rate is 39 in the UK and 38 in the European Union. However, this surge in university students has also led to a rise in unemployed graduates.

As the age of marriage and motherhood continues to increase in Turkey, with women getting married at 26 and men at 28, and the age of first motherhood at 29, the total fertility rate has dropped from 2.38 in 2001 to 1.51 today. To address the concerns surrounding the declining young population, 2025 has been declared as the “Year of the Family” in Turkey. Young people who wish to get married will be provided with 150 thousand lira loan support, along with fee support for each child.

With these initiatives in place, Turkey aims to support young people in their marriage decisions and encourage family growth as the country navigates the challenges posed by the decreasing number of young and qualified individuals in the population.
