The Rising Global Influence of Central Asia

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev Highlights Central Asia’s Growing Global Importance

During his remarks at the Astana Think Tank Forum on October 17, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the increasing global significance of Central Asia. He pointed out that the region’s current situation is vastly different from a decade ago, with countries actively cooperating across various fields.

Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s strong commitment to close cooperation with its Central Asian neighbors, emphasizing that the country’s regional policy is centered on strengthening ties with immediate partners. He highlighted the effectiveness of regular meetings among Central Asian leaders in aligning strategic priorities and enhancing partnerships.

“We are dedicated to broad cooperation that benefits not only Kazakhstan but all Central Asian countries,” Tokayev stated in response to a question about promoting the role of mid-sized nations through regional collaboration.

The President noted the rising visibility of Central Asia on the global stage, reflecting the region’s increasing political and economic potential. He expressed hope that his regional counterparts share this perspective and reiterated the importance of bolstering the region’s position worldwide.

Tokayev advocated for greater inclusion of regional and mid-sized countries in global decision-making processes, urging their voices to be heard in forums like the United Nations Security Council. He called for a more inclusive and stable international system where nations of all sizes can contribute to building a better world.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Tokayev reiterated his stance that seeking peaceful solutions is crucial. He stressed the need for realistic peace plans supported by the international community, including initiatives proposed by China and Brazil.

During a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in September, Tokayev had voiced support for peace initiatives by Brazil and China, warning of the irreversible consequences of escalating the war. He emphasized that pursuing peace through constructive negotiations is a strategic move demonstrating wisdom, not weakness.
