The UAE: World’s AI Testing Ground
The United Arab Emirates is positioning itself as a global testing ground for the development of regulations surrounding artificial intelligence. Omar Al Olama, the UAE Minister of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, expressed his commitment to this opportunity in an interview with Bloomberg.
Al Olama revealed that the UAE has successfully attracted a significant number of AI specialists, with approximately 120,000 experts working in the country as of September 2021. This number represents a substantial increase from the 30,000 specialists previously present in the Emirates.
During a virtual address to an audience in the UAE, Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, emphasized the necessity of establishing a “sandbox” in the UAE. He proposed that the country’s experience in implementing new AI technologies could serve as a model for formulating regulations that could be applied globally.
