Toktogul reservoir water level to drop below anticipated levels
Water Level in Toktogul Reservoir Expected to Decrease by 2 Billion Cubic Meters
Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic – The volume of water in the Toktogul reservoir is anticipated to be 2 billion cubic meters lower than originally projected by October 2023, as announced during a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Bakyt Torobaev.
The initial plan was for the reservoir to contain 14.3 billion cubic meters of water by October 1. However, the current forecast estimates a level of only 12.4 billion cubic meters.
To address this matter, Bakyt Torobaev has instructed strict monitoring of electricity consumption limits.
“All relevant state institutions, together with the National Electric Network of Kyrgyzstan OJSC, should ensure strict compliance with electricity consumption limits. This is the summer season, so let’s save electricity. Let’s utilize the water from the Toktogul reservoir wisely,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, it was highlighted that the supply of coal and fuel oil for heating and power plants (HPP) in Bishkek and Osh, as well as power equipment repairs, is progressing according to plan. A total of 1.2 million tons of coal will be procured for the capital’s HPP, including 550,000 tons of imported fuel. An additional 1.3 million tons of coal must be prepared for the general population.
The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers emphasized the necessity of providing the population with an adequate and reasonably priced supply of coal in a timely manner.
“I urge the heads of regions and districts to monitor the domestic price of coal. There are numerous private coal mining companies in the country, but they must not illegally increase prices or act as intermediaries. The Cabinet of Ministers will prohibit coal exports if private mining companies raise costs for domestic consumers while exporting fuel. First and foremost, coal mining companies should fulfill the coal demands of budgetary institutions and the population,” he stated.
Bakyt Torobaev also directed the members of the republican headquarters to promptly address all issues related to the upcoming autumn-winter season, ensuring a prevention of situations similar to those experienced in Mailuu-Suu and Orlovka last year.
