Rising Student Crime Rates in Tashkent: A Call for Action
The Tashkent city prosecutor’s office has revealed alarming statistics indicating that over half of student-related crimes are committed by individuals attending state-run universities, including the Transport, Technical, and National universities. This concerning trend was highlighted during an expanded meeting focused on youth engagement and the prevention of offenses in educational institutions.
Tashkent, home to 92 universities with over 562,000 students, is grappling with a rising tide of crime among its youth. In 2024, 299 students were reported to have committed offenses, accounting for 5.3% of all youth-related crimes. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 36 student-related crimes have already been recorded.
The data presented at the meeting revealed that the most prevalent offenses were traffic-related incidents, which numbered 72 cases (21.5%). Other criminal activities included theft (57 cases), drug-related offenses (46), and bodily harm (41). Notably, there were instances of robbery, assault, and hooliganism as well.
Among the recorded crimes, a striking 53% were committed by students of state universities, totaling 179 individuals. The statistics broke down as follows:
- Transport University: 27 cases
- Technical University: 21 cases
- National University: 20 cases
- Economic University: 19 cases
- Law University: 12 cases
While private universities accounted for 140 crimes (42%), the data showed that students from such institutions were also involved in various offenses, with the highest numbers reported at:
- ISFT: 23 cases
- Alfraganus University: 21 cases
- Chemistry University: 20 cases
Additionally, students of foreign universities in Tashkent were responsible for 16 crimes (5%).
In response to these troubling findings, officials have been urged to enhance efforts aimed at student guidance. This includes instilling respect for traditional values, promoting spiritual development during leisure time, fostering a crime-free academic environment, and upholding principles of equitable education.
The growing trend of student-related crime in Tashkent underscores the pressing need for comprehensive strategies to support youth and ensure their positive engagement within educational institutions.
