Tragedy at Sea: 38 killed as boat capsizes off Yemen coast

Approximately 250 people were on board a boat that sank off the coast of Rudum, east of Aden, according to survivors who were rescued by local fishermen and residents. The tragic incident was caused by strong winds, leaving around 100 individuals still missing at sea.

Most of those on board were migrants from Ethiopia, hoping to use Yemen as a transit point to reach Gulf countries. Hadi Al-Khurma, the Regional Director of Rudum, stated that the boat went down before it could reach the shore, leading to a frantic rescue operation to save as many lives as possible.

While 78 migrants were successfully rescued, the fate of the remaining 100 individuals remains uncertain as search and rescue efforts continue. The United Nations has been made aware of the situation, emphasizing the ongoing challenges faced by migrants crossing dangerous waters in search of a better life.

Last year alone, 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa, highlighting the desperate circumstances that drive individuals to undertake perilous journeys in search of safety and opportunity. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with irregular migration and the need for international cooperation to address the root causes of displacement and protect vulnerable populations on the move.
