Tragic Loss: 14 Pilgrims Perish in Hajj Heatwave
At least 14 Jordanian citizens have tragically lost their lives during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia due to extreme heat. The death toll is expected to rise as search efforts continue for 17 more individuals who have been reported missing. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan, the deaths were attributed to sunstroke caused by the scorching temperatures.
The ministry is working closely with Saudi Arabian authorities to handle the proper burial or transportation of the victims’ bodies as per their families’ wishes. Along with the Jordanians, five Iranian pilgrims have also been confirmed dead, though the cause of their deaths remains unspecified.
With over 1.8 million participants expected to partake in this year’s pilgrimage, Saudi officials are facing challenges in dealing with the consequences of the extreme weather conditions. The Saudi Press Agency has already reported 225 cases of heat stroke at a treatment center near Mount Arafat, where the Hajj will conclude on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, mass fatal incidents, such as stampedes and tent fires, are not uncommon during the pilgrimage. However, extreme heat remains one of the primary concerns for organizers and attendees. Last year, 240 individuals lost their lives during the Hajj, while the deadliest disaster in 2015 resulted in over 2,000 fatalities.
As the Hajj draws to a close, authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, while also addressing the tragic losses suffered during this year’s pilgrimage.
