Tragic Update: Ship Sinks in Marmara Sea
A commercial ship named ‘BATUHAN A’ sent an emergency signal at 06.32 on 15 February after departing from the Marmara Island Badalan Port on the evening of 14 February. The ship, loaded with 1250 tons of marble dust, was headed to Gemlik Port but went missing with its signal being lost at 07.12.
The Bursa Governor, Mahmut Demirtaş, chaired a crisis center in Mudanya and Karacabey districts to coordinate the search and rescue efforts for the ship, which sank 4 miles offshore in the north of Karacabey district. A total of 275 personnel and various teams and boats, including the Coast Guard and Naval Forces Command, were mobilized for the rescue mission.
The search and rescue ship TCG AKIN, mine hunting ship TCG AYVALIK, and research ship TCG ÇUBUKLU were deployed to the region for support. The Ministry of National Defense reported that the Naval Forces detected the ship at a depth of 51 meters with the sonar device. Underwater images revealed that the ship was sitting flat on the seabed, providing valuable information for the ongoing search and rescue efforts. A 3D modeling of the ship’s sinking position has also been created to aid the rescue mission.
The situation remains urgent as the search continues for the crew members of the cargo ship ‘BATUHAN A.’ Our thoughts are with the crew and their families during this difficult time as rescue efforts persist.
